THE ART OF SILENCE
Drum & Bass Collection
CHINA WOLCD 1072
This is the third rework a selection of Anne Dudley and co’s songs in contemporary style, following 1990’s Ambient Collection and 1991’s The Fon Mixes. As apparently, the third most sampled act of all time (after James Brown and Kraftwerk), the Art of Noise, with their determinedly electronic and experimental catalogue, lend themselves to the cut-and-paste of studio rehash. Here a range of jungle DJs including the Metalheadz' J. Majik and Doc Scott, rework the AON’s angular, awkward sound in thoroughly silky, jazz style. Skittering bass beats and fluttering percussion are firmly to the fore, with the songs themselves as often as not left as distant echoes reverberating occasionally through the dense mixes. **
