Art Of Noise.
State Of The Art
CHINA RECORDS

3-CD set featuring the third most sampled band of all time (allegedly), remixed by The Prodigy, 808 State, Corl Cox, The Orb etc.

The Art Of Noise spent the '80s mining that rich Erik Satie/Run DMC crossover territory strangely ignored by their contemporaries. With the breathy novocaine Moments In Love they were the Laurie Anderson you could dance to, while the haunting Robinson Crusoe confirmed the resonance of '60s TV theme tunes to a generation of thirtysomethings. Not surprisingly, the ambient stuff collected on CD 1 works best. On CD2, their rich and refined textures are reduced to less than the sum of their parts by 1991-style clodhoppery. CD3 similarly shrinks the band's expansive esoterica to formulaic drum'n'bass (there's a lot of it about). Best served chilled.
